MICHAEL CALLAN is a thirty-eight year veteran of the Fire Service and a former Captain with the Wallingford, Connecticut Fire Department. Mr. Callan has extensive background in the state wide training and hazardous materials response of utility personnel and emergency responders throughout the United States. He has as a trusted and established track record for developing practical emergency response plans and training programs for utility industries and public safety professionals.

After more than thirty-eight years of teaching emergency response, Michael Callan has shared his gift of presenting technical information in an easy to understand and employ manner that appeals to all public service professionals. His literary works are a collection of the most useful concepts, tactics and teaching exercises available. Mr. Callan has shared his emergency response experience by authoring national hazardous materials firefighting training textbooks including Street Smart HazMat Response and Responding to Natural Gas Emergencies, Responding to Electrical Emergencies, used extensively by the Utilities Industries and published by Red Hat Publishing. The books, in their second edition, are baseline texts used by utility companies to train safety professionals in safe effective practices and emergency response. Mr. Callan has instructed and implemented several Utility companies outreach programs.

Mr. Callan also has broad experience in developing and delivering multi-media training programs for industry and public safety. Michael Callan created and designed the Responding To Utility Emergencies Online in association with VentureMark Media, to complement the current  Responding to Natural Gas and Electrical Emergencies. It is used in states throughout the country and in major cities such as Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle. He developed the Pipeline Association for Public Awareness emergency response outreach program with pipeline training scenarios that reaches out to 40 states. Other interactive training modules include the DOT / Office of Pipeline Safety’s Pipeline Emergencies Instructor Program and the widely adopted Propane Emergencies Training Facilitator’s Guide.

Mr. Callan has keynoted and conducted over 1000 national training conferences. In May of 2013, he received the John M. Eversole Lifetime Achievement Award given annually by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) to recognize a living individual who has had an exceptionally distinguished career in the field of hazardous-materials emergency response. In 2010, he was the recipient of the prestigious Norman Y. Mineta Excellence in Transportation Award for his significant and lasting contribution to the safety of people, products and materials in transit. In 2001, he was selected as the California Hazardous Materials Instructor of the Year and received the International Society of Fire Instructors'—George D. Post Instructor of the Year in 1989.

His company Callan and Company conducts safety, chemical and emergency response training around the country for Industrial and Municipal HazMat Teams.
